Conventional Sandblasters Vs. Portable Sandblasters

Sandblasting is a perfect way to clean surfaces using pressurised air via compressor. It commonly uses abrasive materials such as steel grit,  silica, glass beads, walnut and coconut shells, pumice and other materials you prefer.  Given the many benefits of using sandblasters, you might still wonder what type of sandblasting method is better.

There are basically two types of sandblasters and the method of sandblasting differs from each other. Learning the two types and their method of use will help you decide which one works best for you. Let’s take a close look at the types and what they offer.

Conventional Sandblasters

Traditional or conventional sandblasting is a method that uses tumble or cabinet blasters. It is generally used in large-scale industrial settings that requires a higher workshop load. Tumbler sandblasters mostly eliminate hard to reach burrs, dirt, grit and other surface abnormalities. It uses a rotating basket with a sandblaster gun aimed on it where the parts intended to clean are placed. Cabinet sandblasters on the other hand are also perfect for deburring, rust removals and surface treatments. And yes, it also uses a cabinet but has an opening for the operator to manually do the sandblasting. Conventional sandblasters use enclosed cabinet systems to confine sandblasting residue.

Portable Sandblasters

Also developed for industrial applications, portable sandblasters are a major breakthrough when it comes to sandblasting. It can conveniently strip off paint, rust, dirt and other unwanted surface textures with the help of portable sandblasting guns. It can either be siphon or gravity-fed sandblasters. Portable sandblasters can come with a tank for the abrasive media and can also be in the form of a sandblaster gun with a cup normally with 600 cc capacity.

All sandblasters can come in different forms. But the type that suits your needs will always depend on the material you are working on and the result you are trying to achieve. Whether conventional or portable, as long as it supports the blasting media you need and meets your budget, any type will do. But of course, portable sandblasters are proven to be more economical and very flexible to use.
