This is the part that one grabs to turn and twist in order to loosen it so as to insert or remove a bit. My OEM spring retainer has been broken and needed replacement for many years. LE LEMATEC's spring retainer is an excellent fit in both form and function.LE LEMATEC also makes a quick change retainer for air hammers that replaces the use of a spring retainer entirely. It's part number is LE-B74, available here on Amazon - See my review…I love it! It screws onto the end of your gun and locks into place with three allen screws. The retainer locks the bit into place with three large ball bearings in much the same way your air tools connect to your air hose. I currently have this setup on my IR 121 and love it. This spring retainer is a backup.Bottom Line: 5 StarsIt is a suitable replacement for an IR-121 air hammer. I cannot definitively speak to anyother make or model tool, though I suspect this size is standardized. If the quality of the LE-B74 quick change retainer is any indication, this is a good product. Good set of air chisels the quality is good and they are four of the most useful types of air chisels, most people could get by with just these four chisels. They fit both of my air chisels, one with the spring retainer and the other with the chuck both work well with these chisels. It takes a while to get them so if you have a job that needs doing you might want to look elsewhere but if you don't mind waiting a few weeks they are good quality.

I gave it three stars based on the price. It's a bit proud on the price. But it's a good part to have when you need it. I ordered this as a spare . Nothing worse than breaking a spring and being dead in the water.When I change out the spring and get some use I'll document how ling it lasts and update my review. I think a good price for a replacement spring shouldn't pass 8.00 personally. You can litterally buy cheap harbor freight whole guns for about 15.00 on sale so...

LE LEMATEC Quick Change Retainer / Chuck for Air Hammers - Locks Bits On & Works Great! Fits IR!LE LEMATEC's quick change retainer replaces the traditional spring retainer entirely. It screws onto the end of your gun where the spring retainer used to sit and locks into place with three allen screws. The retainer itself locks the bit into place with three large ball bearings in much the same way your air tools connect to your air hose. I have this setup on my IR 121 now and love it. The traditional spring retainer is now a backup. This will not allow bits to exit your air hammer without you expressly releasing it from the chuck. No bits will go “flying” again. In my years of experience, many shops did not allow inexperienced technicians to use air hammers at all because of how easy it is to let bits “fly” doing damage and put themselves and others at risk of severe injury up to death. This quick change chuck retains your bits until YOU release them.I used a basic, old school, belt wrench to grip the body of the quick change retainer to install it on my IR-121 air hammer. I backed out the allen screws to just the collar insert so it would not mar my air hammer. It twisted on firmly. When the chuck was seated fully, I tightened the allen screws. Mine required a 3mm allen wrench.Bottom Line: 5 StarsLE LEMATEC's quick change retainer is a more than suitable replacement for an IR-121 air hammer's spring retainer. I cannot definitively speak to any other make or model tool's specific fitment; however, I suspect the size is standardized among manufacturers. I have used this a few times and even had a bit's shaft “mushroom” inside my gun. This required removal of the chuck to pry the bad air hammer bit out. So, this quick change retainer / chuck is removable and reinstallable. I can HIGHLY recommend it to you!

I have an older campbell hausfeld air hammer I've used for years. I've fought with the old style spring retainer to change the bits, caught the spring numerous times in various tight areas working on cars, and broke those spring retainers. I wish I would have found this quick bit change adapter years ago. It is a significant improvement over the old spring style retainers. If you're contemplating on whether or not to use this, buy it. It does thread on a little rough but I was able to get it secured to the air hammer with no issue with operation.
