Air Impact Driver vs. Impact Wrench: What's the Difference?

An impact driver uses a 1/4" hex bit chuck and delivers rotational torque for driving screws, bolts, and fasteners. An impact wrench uses a socket drive (1/2" or 3/8") and delivers much higher torque for lug nuts and large bolts. The LE-ID413 impact driver at 40 ft-lbs is ideal for assembly, panel work, and precision fastening where you need controlled torque without overtightening.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of bits does this impact driver accept?

The LE-ID413 accepts standard 1/4" hex shank bits — Phillips, flathead, Torx, hex, and square drive bits. Any standard impact-rated bit set will work.

Can I use this for automotive work?

Yes. The compact design and 40 ft-lb torque make it perfect for interior panel screws, trim fasteners, license plates, and light assembly. For lug nuts and suspension bolts, you'll want the higher-torque 1/2" impact wrench instead.

What compressor do I need?

The LE-ID413 consumes 18 SCFM at 6.2 bar (90 PSI) under load. Most shop compressors (20+ gallon) will run this tool continuously. Smaller portable compressors (6-gallon) will work but with brief pauses for tank recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between an impact driver and impact wrench?

An impact driver uses a 1/4" hex chuck for driving screws and small fasteners with precision. An impact wrench uses a socket drive for larger nuts and bolts. The LE-ID413 is designed for screw driving, not heavy lug nut removal.

What CFM does this need?

The LE-ID413 air impact driver is rated at 18 SCFM at 90 PSI under load. Because it runs in short bursts, most 20+ gallon shop compressors run it continuously; a 6-gallon portable works with brief pauses for tank recovery.

What is the difference between an impact driver and an impact wrench?

An impact driver uses a 1/4" hex chuck for driver bits (screws, Torx, hex) — it is a screw-driving tool. An impact wrench uses a square drive for sockets (bolts, lug nuts) — it is a bolt-removal tool. The LE-ID413 is an impact driver for high-speed screw driving. For lug nuts and bolts, use the 1/2" impact wrench instead.

Can I use this for automotive work?

Yes, for screw-type fasteners: interior trim screws, underhood Phillips and Torx fasteners, self-tapping sheet metal screws, and license plate bolts. It is NOT for lug nuts or bolts — use an impact wrench with sockets for those.

Quick Setup Guide

Insert your hex bit into the 1/4" hex quick-change chuck — it locks automatically with no tools needed. Connect to your air line via the 1/4" NPT inlet and set compressor pressure to 90 PSI. The twin-hammer mechanism delivers 40 ft-lb of torque at 13,000 RPM. Use the forward/reverse switch to select drive direction. For best results on self-tapping screws, start at reduced pressure (60 PSI) to avoid over-driving, then increase for lag bolts and larger fasteners.

Compact 1/4" pneumatic impact driver praised for "exceptional torque and speed" with 13,000 RPM and 40 ft-lbs torque. Customers said it's "perfect for tight spaces" and light-duty tasks. Well-built with durable construction and ergonomic grip. Includes bonus blow gun. Some note the price seems high and bit holder has play. Best for 20-30 ft-lbs tasks, not heavy-duty work.

  • Exceptional torque and speed for effortless bolt removal and driving.
  • Great for tight spaces where full-size impact wrenches won't fit.
  • Built like a little tank: very solid, very durable and very powerful.

Very robust build, very hefty, very durable; works great!

LE LEMATEC Air Impact Driver Professional ToolSmall albeit very robust, very hefty air impact driver. Built like a little tank: very solid, very durable and very powerful (13000 RPM, 40 ft.-lbs. Max Torque. Has two-hammer clutch, 1/4” NPT inlet and a hex head. When I hooked it to both of my compressors (one at a time of course; one big compressor and one small one) the impact driver worked with ease. Very simple to operate. It fits perfectly in the hand, has a very good grip, and I appreciate its heftiness, which helps me have better control over the tool. There are “bonus” items that are included with the air driver: among them, a mini air blower gun, which comes in very handy for (in my case) blowing all the saw dust off of my benches, tools, as well as the floor. There are 4 other small attachments as well. The only thing I don’t quite understand is its high price point. On the one hand it is constructed of Chrome-Vanadium steel, tool steel, aluminum, as well as alloy aluminum, and these metals can really add up. In addition to some special plastic and hard rubber. But on the other hand it’s a relatively small tool, so it seems difficult to justify its price. But it IS definitely a high quality tool. And it’s very difficult to know how much it should be when, in truth, the prices for 1/2” air impact drivers are all over the place, ranging from $40-$50 to over $300! So, because the tool is so high quality and does work so well, I for one am willing to give them the benefit of the doubt as regards the price. I realize that that’s easy for me to say as a reviewer, but nonetheless that’s truly how I feel. If it lasts as long as I’m suspecting it will—b/c of its extremely robust build—it’ll definitely turn out to be a good value. If, on the other hand, there are any problems along the way, I’ll be sure to update this review pronto. In the meantime, this air impact driver is very impressive, and definitely seems made to last.

1/4" pneumatic impact wrench/driver

This 1/4" drive impact/driver tool is well engineered, well designed, good manufacturing, easy to use. It came with a small "blow gun" with different nozzles, as well. So, I used the included Teflon tape and a 14mm wrench to snug up the 1/4" nipple. Took it to the garage and hooked it up to my 21 gallon compressor and put a few different hexagonal 1/4" drive attachments into the chuck. The chuck is a little stiff (diameter) so I oiled it to help inserting and removing gadgets easier. You do need to use 1/4" hexagonal drive shafts that have a recess machined in them so the chuck can "grab" them. Very good tool for your lighter torque needs and getting into tight spaces. I installed a 1/2" drive adapter with a 27mm deep socket on it as an example of "what NOT to do" with this impact tool/driver. It is not to be used for breaking bolts and nuts loose on anything torqued higher than maybe twenty to thirty foot pounds in my opinion. When I held onto the 27mm deep socket, I can stop the tool from rotating. So, don't overwork the tool and use it appropriately under the hood or around the home. The plastic housing on the tool body can be rotated to direct the exhausting air in any direction. The little "blow gun" is a neat little gadget that has a pressure/air flow knob on it and a push button to release the air. Both tools are a nice addition to anyone's pneumatic tool kit.

Nothing egregiously wrong with the item itself

This tool seems rather expensive but works alright. I'm not sure what makes it worth twice what similar tools seem to be priced at, or why a "professional" tool would have so much play in the bit holder. The direction setting ring is kind of stiff and fairly inconvenient. But overall it works and nothing egregiously wrong about the item itself that I've noticed. Especially with my small air compressor I'll probably just stick with my cordless impact driver for most jobs.

Does the job

I’m pretty happy with it. It’s compact, well-built, and easy to use—perfect for tight spaces where my larger tools won’t fit. I used the included Teflon tape and a 14mm wrench to secure the 1/4" nipple, then hooked it up to my 21-gallon compressor. The chuck was initially stiff, but a little oil helped. It requires hex drive shafts with a recess for proper engagement. The adjustable exhaust port and bonus blow gun with various nozzles were nice additions. It’s become my go-to tool for hard-to-reach areas, and the thoughtful extras make it a valuable addition to my pneumatic toolkit.

Works well, it is smaller than typical but just as powerful.

I was a bit surprised at the size and weight of this, but after I used it, size wasn't an issue. The tool is well made and feels good in the hand, and didn't cause any fatigue. I had no problems or concerns. This would make an excellent addition to any shop. A definite recommendation. I have been invited to participate in the Amazon Vine program and it is my responsibility to offer an unbiased opinion. I hope you found this review helpful.

Great little tool!

First off, this driver is really tiny. So tiny in fact that it had been delivered and I was questioning Amazon's saying it had. I had a stack of unopened Amazon packages, and to my surprise it was in a tiny box. I was for some reason expecting a much larger tool, and at first was a little disappointed. Not really a big concern, I have full size air driving tools already. The disappointment faded almost immediately when I realized all of the tight spots I can use this tool in going forward. Places where my cordless 18v drill or driver just won't fit. This is my new "get out of a tight spot" tool. Is it going to break over torqued lug nuts, absolutely not. But it's a convenient little tool for really tight spots. Construction is great and everything works as it should. A little dial around the trigger lets you choose which direction the bit will turn. The air exhaust port is on a swivel so you can choose where to vent out the air. They included an inexpensive quick connect fitting and a small roll of teflon tape. Added bonus, they included a small little air blowing tool that came with its own quick connect fitting and a couple of different attachments to boot. My current blower fitting is pretty large, and this tiny little one is much easier to handle. This vendor really took the time to put together a nice little package.
